Since RIM officially launched its BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 last spring, we at SherWeb have been conducting numerous tests and simulations in order to offer it to our customers. The wait is finally over! SherWeb’s servers were upgraded with the new software version during last week’s regular maintenance.

Not only does this new software version offer peace of mind with a stable platform engineered to meet the demands of mission critical enterprise environments, it offers the end-user great features such as the ability to:

• Flag emails for follow-up
• Forward calendar entries
• Manage personal folders
• View and manage personal contact subfolders
• View and use contacts in public folders
• Listen to .wma files

Starting now, BES 5.0 will be available to all our Hosted Exchange 2007 users. SherWeb’s Hosted BlackBerry solution allows businesses of all sizes to benefit from wireless synchronization without having to invest large sums of money on server hardware, software and ongoing IT support involved with managing a BlackBerry Enterprise Server internally.

Hello Georgio, it requires that you update your Device to the latest 5.0 BlackBerry OS for your handheld. If you want to do an update for your BlackBerry, you need to go to your carrier’s website as your phone’s OS has been specifically tailered to work properly based on their integrated settings to the standard BlackBerry OS. However, you can check BlackBerry’s site to see if they have an update specifically for your device. Be warned however, that using a generic OS update may potentially cause carrier specific features not to function because they are not included or updated when your do an firmware update of your OS. If you want to read the offical announcement from RIM, I’ve taken the leisure to copy and pasted the info for you below However, here is the link if you would like to read the entire article:

WATERLOO, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – May 4, 2009) – Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM)

BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 supports all current BlackBerry smartphones and supports the following smartphone features with BlackBerry Device Software 5.0(i):

- Remote access to Windows network file shares to allow smartphone users to securely retrieve, view, edit and email documents from behind the firewall.

- Flag emails for follow-up in the same way that flags are used in Microsoft Outlook(R).

- Create, move, browse, rename and delete email folders directly from the smartphone, and view and attach files from those folders to emails sent from the smartphone.

- View attachments in a meeting request or calendar entry, and forward calendar appointments with attachments.

- Easily manage personal and public distribution lists.

- Use of Calendar Meeting Delegation for IBM(R) Lotus(R) Domino(R), which allows attendees to delegate invitations to others from their BlackBerry smartphones

Daniel i’m suprise that you don’t know the difference between a Server update and a firmware update… Gregorio all the step above are for a firmaware update meaning to update your Smartphone… and those step are not required to benefit a server update.
Don’t get me wrong the fact that you update your phone is not a bad thing but was not required to benefit from this server update since the server will provide all those new feature

Djay, unfortunately if your phone’s firmware is not up to date your phone will NOT be able to take advantage of the new server updates because the features that come with BES 5.0 do not exist within the phone’s firmware. However, your phone will continue to work normally and an update is NOT required if you do not want to take advantage of the new features. That said, I went one step further and contacted BlackBerry Support and received an official response so that

Hi Georgio, we’re at the 95% stage of implementing the remote wipe (we just need to create cute icons). The Policies are a different matter as what gets translated from support to development is done on priority basis and truthfully it’s not a feature that is high on the list of other control panel fixes and changes. I certainly won’t say it will never be done, just not anytime soon.

Daniel

Hello Gregorio, I have indeed taken heed of your advice and I have taken steps to see if this is possible to put in place.

Didn’t understood the last part :s could you explain better please?

Hello,
Would it be possible to have the following IT Policy, as described in the article linked below, set up properly on SherWeb to allow BlackBerry users to take full advantage of the Facebook app? Currently, these Facebook options are grayed out due to the BES server settings. It seems to be a really quick fix to implement.

Thanks!

By the way, per the link above, I believe the current setup on SherWeb is either “Scenario 3″ or “Scenario 4″. See the link to understand what I’m talking about.

Thanks again!

I’m looking for an Hosted BES, which has exactly the mentioned feature above: Is there a Chance to get the Facebook-APP IT Policy, so that calendar and contact facebook sync is working?

greets

Paul
