Mobile Security: How Safe Is Your Business Data?

Companies go to great lengths to protect their business data. But what happens when employees check their business email from their mobile while at a hotel on a business trip, or even at the café down the street? What security threats does this create and how can you minimize these risks? More importantly, do employees fully comprehend that their mobile devices could be exposing sensitive business data to serious risk?

We did some research on this issue and found some pretty interesting—and worrisome—information.

The good news is, there are concrete steps that employers and IT managers can take to minimize the potential threats associated with employee mobile device use.

As a long-time hosting provider of secure cloud-based business email and collaboration tools like Hosted Exchange 2013, and military-grade SkyNox online backup, keeping data secure is what we do best. With that in mind, we thought we’d pass on some helpful tips that you can put right to work.

Hurricane Sandy, Frankerstorm, SherWeb Hosted Exchange, SharePoint Hosted, SkyNox Online Backup

Takeaway: Hurricane Sandy gave many businesses lacking an appropriate backup and recovery plan a terrifying wake-up call. Will this natural disaster change their ways?

As the U.S. eastern seaboard slowly starts to emerge from the staggering destruction Hurricane Sandy left in its path yesterday, many of us are being hit with a terrifying thought: Is this the shape of storms to come?

While scientists say that the extreme weather Hurricane Sandy brought down on us was rare and that no individual weather event can be directly attributed to climate change, they do agree that we will see more and more natural disasters in the future because of climate change.

As scientists and world governments struggle to find ways of coping with our natural disaster-filled future, the rest of us are left with the responsibility of protecting our lives—and our livelihoods—to the best of our abilities.

And right now, countless businesses, particularly SMBs, are realizing that they don’t have an appropriate cloud backup and recovery plan in place.

Windows 8, Microsoft Tablet, Surface, Microsoft, Windows 8 Launch

Will users be willing to overcome the learning curve of Windows 8 to have a touchscreen desktop?

Microsoft fans will want to mark a big X on October 26 on their calendars. Or rather, a big 8 — in reference to Windows 8, which is available in stores today. So is the new Surface, aka the Microsoft tablet.

And this isn’t just any old Windows launch, either. It is Microsoft’s biggest product launch in history. How big? The Windows 8 launch campaign will have cost a hefty $1.5-$1.8 billion.

But wait, what’s Apple up to? As we know, the new iPad Mini device was unveiled on October 23 — beating Microsoft to the punch. This launch came just a few short weeks after Apple’s September 12 unveiling of the iPhone 5.

Meanwhile, the Microsoft marketing team must be having a field day. Not only do they have a $1.5+ billion budget to play with, but Windows 8 is being called the most radical OS redesign since it introduced Windows 95 17 years ago. Here’s a closer look:

Apple competition, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Apple, Microsoft, Dell, Adobe, Motorola, Samsung, IBM, Google, Sun Microsystems, Oracle, AT&T, Verizon

Big Companies. Big Rivalries

Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, the greatest tech rivalry in history? Arguably. But one thing is for sure: When Jobs passed away in October 2011, it closed the book on a 30-year history between two IT superpowers who had been colleagues, competitors and yes, friends (according to reports, the two even went on double dates in the 1980s.)

Whether you’re a Mac or PC fan, we all benefit from geek-powered rivalries like these. And whether they want to admit it or not, companies like Microsoft, Apple, Samsung, Dell—you name it—all need each other. Otherwise, Android and the Apple iOS wouldn’t be running ActiveSync today, for example.

But the sphere of Apple competition (and Microsoft competition) goes well beyond Jobs vs. Gates. Let’s take a look at what could be the 10 best tech rivalries of all time….

Happy Birthday Android, Microsoft Exchange, Hosted Exchange, Samsung, Motorola

Happy 5th Birthday Android!

Android has come a long way since its beta operating system was launched in November 2007—back in the days when most of us were still carrying around a cell phone. And just look at how far it’s come: today, Google’s mobile OS firmly rules the global wireless market.

But Android’s rise to the top wasn’t always smooth sailing. What started out as a promising OS concept nearly went DOA—but was shortly resuscitated by impressive turnaround that eventually led to its current global domination.

It’s been an exciting five years for Android to say the least. But what does the future hold for the Android OS and the Android Phone? Or for the ongoing Android vs. Apple mobile war?

SharePoint 2010, public folders, SherWeb, Hosted Exchange

SharePoint 2010 or Public Folders in Exchange?

SharePoint 2010 is a collaborative business tool that makes it easier for employees to work together by being able to share information and documents. Because this information is available anytime, from any location, SharePoint can boost productivity in a very concrete way.

Public folders in Exchange are somewhat similar in that they are specifically created to allow employees to share information with each other, too. And if you create a public folder in Outlook, you can also share contacts, messages, calendar items, etc.

So what makes them different? And which one is better suited to an organization’s specific needs?

That’s a question customers frequently ask us.

Today, SherWeb’s Level 3 Tech and Trainer Yves Landry breaks it down into simple terms, comparing an Exchange 2010 public folder (PF) infrastructure and a SharePoint (SP) Foundation 2010 environment.

SherWeb, MEC, Microsoft Exchange conference, hosted exchange, hosted exchange 2013

Not at the MEC? One of the thing you’ve missed: the Arena Challenge! (Credit: thoughtsofanidlemind.wordpress.com)

MEC 2012 is now drawing to an end, following a mysterious 10-year hiatus that no one can quite explain, including Microsoft itself.

Last week we mentioned that SherWeb’s Simon Poirier (Sys Admin) and Samuel Nadeau (IT Infrastructure Leader) would be there, eager to finally meet their many Exchange peers face-to-face and to get the latest Microsoft Exchange 2013 news straight from the horse’s mouth.

So what new and exciting news came out of this event that wraps up today in Orlando, Florida? Microsoft promoted the event as the “Lost MEC”, and “a conference like no other”. Did MEC 2012 live up to the hype? Were there any major surprises? And did Simon win the Exchange arena? Find out right here…

SherWeb, MEC, Microsoft Exchange conference, hosted exchange, hosted exchange 2013

Here's why you need to be at the MEC!

Microsoft’s Exchange Conference (MEC) is back after a 10-year hiatus. SherWeb’s Sys Admin Simon Poirier and IT Infrastructure Leader Samuel Nadeau will be there—along with pretty much the entire Exchange community. Will you?

It’s not much of a secret that the main topic will be Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 (or Exchange 15, depending on who you ask), which is expected to be released sometime very soon. Given all the information that’s already been released on Exchange 2013, like the Exchange Administration Center (EAC), and the browser-based successor to the MMC-based Exchange Management Console (EMC), plus all the information that’s sure to come, is it worth your time and cost to attend MEC?

We think so. Here’s why…
