Instead of bouncing from site to site for file sharing, calendars, blog and wiki creation, online meetings and file storage, along with a long list of other options, users who sign up for a SharePoint account will have easy one click access to everything in one location. SharePoint offers programs geared towards individuals or big corporations, ensuring that customers will get the right fit for both their needs and their budget without having to download any software.
With the ever increasing popularity of Smartphones, it is integral for business solutions to operate across multiple platforms. With SharePoint 2010, no one will lose the ability to interact via the site when they’re away from the office. All of the functionality that your office relies on will be accessible from a mobile device as soon as some basic configuration steps are taken.

1) Your IT department will need to determine which functions are needed for mobile users. Several of SharePoint’s functions are automatically enabled to work on a mobile device but some of them require the usage of a mobile web parts adapter. It is a relatively quick and easy procedure that most IT employees will be able to tackle with no issues.
2) If desired, the mobile version of SharePoint 2010 can be configured in custom ways, enabling your company to determine exactly how the web pages will act in a mobile environment. This process also requires the usage of mobile web parts adapters.

3) A wide number of smartphones are currently equipped with a browser that is compatible with SharePoint 2010, such as Blackberry, iPhone and the Nokia S60. Before setting up the mobile option, ensure that all of your employees are using a compatible phone. A full list can be found on the SharePoint website.

4) Privacy and security are just as important on a cell phone as they are on a computer, so it’s vital that security measures be put into place. Depending of your service provider, your IT department could be able to turn on SSL communication to keep the connection between everyone’s phones and the SharePoint website as secure as it is from the office computers.

With just a little bit of tweaking, SharePoint 2010 can become a one stop solution for your business, whether you’re in the office or on the go. It will require minimal training, both for the office based and mobile based versions, and it will provide an unrivaled amount of functionally in one place.

With major players such as Google+ and Facebook in the market, SharePoint has some serious competition for the position of top social networking platform.

To respond to this challenge, Microsoft has implemented its social networking features alongside the powerful feature set already present in SharePoint 2010.

SharePoint 2010 has launched with a plethora of social networking features missing from many of the content management suites that it competes against. With new features like “My Site Profile”, various ways to get news and activities feeds, suggestions, people search, tags, blogs, wikis, video, and more SharePoint 2010 seems poised to take the social networking world by storm while maintaining the core functionality that has made it such a successful product. Below, let’s take a bit of time to look more in depth at these social networking features:

My Site Profile:

The “My Site Profile” feature is essentially the user’s home page, with each use getting their own page and containing features such as a profile page where a user can post information about themselves in a way that others can see. They can describe things like their current project, things they have worked on in the past, their skills and history, interests, and what they feel they would be best working on. This also includes their position in the company organizational chart.

Feeds:

Employees also have access to both news feeds and recent activities feeds. Anyone who has ever used Facebook is familiar with the recent activities feed, also known as The Wall, as a listing of what your friends have been doing while you were doing something else. In SharePoint 2010 however, this feed is vastly more useful because it’s not flooded with thousands of posts auto-generated by some flash game. The news feed behaves more like your own status updates, which allow other people to see what you have been posting.

Suggestions:

Suggestions are essentially references. Not only can a team leader on another project locate employees who may be valuable to them, but other employees who know of that leader’s needs can suggest that employee to them. This is crowd sourcing at its finest, taking the load off your management and passing it around to those who would truly know the other employees best.

The feature list goes on and on, and is longer than what we can look into here today. In short, SharePoint 2010 continues to deliver what it always had and now even more.

Microsoft SharePoint is an invaluable addition to any business environment, and is a central repository for web based applications. SharePoint is a powerful tool, but it can be daunting to first time users to understand the many things this software can accomplish. To that end, here are a few things you may not know about Microsoft SharePoint 2010.

1. SharePoint is a great piece of software for creating and maintaining a company intranet site. This has many business benefits, not the least of which is that it allows for the internal publication and review of important employee documentation in a centralized location.

2. This usage of SharePoint also has the advantage that, since SharePoint can be used as a document management application, those employee handbooks that you previously were printing out, and using significant amounts of expensive ink and paper, can now simply be posted to the company SharePoint site, and linked from the company Intranet.

3. SharePoint is also flexible and secure enough to be used for a company website. Allowing the same level of document management and content management that is provided to internal employees to be provided to customers.

4. The application also excels when it comes to configuration and management. Utilizing a “ribbon style” interface that is familiar to most Microsoft Office users, your average user should be able to jump right in and start creating and managing content without extensive training and oversight.

5. SharePoint 2010 also now includes social media integration. This feature allows your users to share information about themselves and what they do more easily, allowing for rapid location of needed resources within both large and small organizations.

6. It is also capable of being utilized and managed remotely. With applications available on many popular portable computing platforms such as the iPhone, iPad, and Android devices, your employees and customers can have the same access to powerful tools in the field as they do in the office.

7. SharePoint has also advanced in taking advantage of innovations from other content management applications with the inclusion of a new Wikipedia-like WYSIWYG editor. This will allow for an increased rate of publication to SharePoint resources, and an editing format that more and more users are becoming familiar with.

8. The ability to embed videos in SharePoint has also been enhanced with SharePoint 2010. Now you can simply embed a video directly into the page without relying on third-party applications, and the videos are rendered using the flexible Microsoft Silverlight framework

9. SharePoint 2010 includes the incredible improvement of allowing SharePoint list metadata to be accessed and utilized by external applications such as Microsoft Excel. This makes migrating data to and from your SharePoint lists quick and painless.

10. Last but not least, SharePoint includes Microsoft Visio integration making it simple and quick for your users to design a flowchart, organizational chart, or other diagram and publish it instantly to the rest of the company.

Simply put, Microsoft SharePoint 2010 is an application bringing a lot of innovation to the field, and is certainly worth a look for any business.

Whether it’s actual talent or just appeal to the masses, here are some of the Internet’s most prominent individuals, who have gone from zero to hero (well, maybe not hero but certainly famed status) and their path to success.

Perez Hilton

Just about everything is easier nowadays because of the Internet. You can run an efficient and effective business using exchange hosted services and web based CRM, and, like him or not, Perez Hilton (really, Mario Armando Lavandeira) has created an empire, ripping into celebrities and doodling and adding captions that poke fun at Hollywood’s biggest stars. With an estimated 2.6 million visitors to his site a month, perezhilton.com is one of the top entertainment sites in the world. The most expensive advertisement slot on the site, priced at $50,000. Hilton’s blogging career began with PageSixSixSix.com (now perezhilton.com), named Hollywood’s Most-Hated Website by The Insider in 2007. As of April 2009 PerezHilton.com was ranked by Alexa as the 491st most trafficked website on the Internet (143rd within the United States) with 2/3rds of users being American and strongest demographic being females between the ages of 18 and 24. His brand has become so popular that Perez is a celebrity in his own right.

Soulja Boy

Click here to view the embedded video.

At 19 years old, Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em has earned himself the title of rapper/record producer, hitting Billboard’s Hot 100 for his single Crank That; a single initially self-published on his YouTube and MySpace pages. Soulja Boy certainly knew how to work the digital age. He was already developing quite a following when he was posting songs on SoundClick in 2005. After releasing Crank That (which was originally produced on the program FL Studio) it hit #1 for seven non-consecutive weeks in September of 2007 on Billboard’s Hot 100. The little tin “Soulja” received a nomination for Best Rap Song for Crank That (Soulja Boy) at the 50th Grammy Awards.

Many critics had speculated that Soulja Boy would likely be a one-hit wonder though his other song Kiss Me Thru the Phone seems to have been quite successful. Ice-T referred to Crank That as “garbage”, while Snoop Dog and Method Man said it had appeal for the “lucrative ringtone market”. Soulja Boy has been quoted as saying that the reason he “gets so much hate” is because his music is so “unique” [Source]. Soulja Boy continues to post his music online and actively interacts with his fans on Twitter.

Matt Harding Where the Hell is Matt?

Click here to view the embedded video.

Matt Harding became an Internet superstar traveling and dancing his way around the world. His Where the Hell Is Matt? Web site has made him a worldwide phenomenon, so much that he now gets paid to travel and make videos. What’s more, he landed a book deal to write about his journeys.

Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson

Click here to view the embedded video.

Where does one get a name like Kimbo Slice? Kimbo is his popular childhood nickname. He acquired the last name Slice after leaving a large cut on his opponent Big D’s eye during his first taped fight. Kimbo Slice is a mixed-martial arts (MMA) fighter who started off a strip club bouncer, then became a limousine driver and bodyguard for a pornography production/promotion company. But at 6’2”, 240 lbs, Slice was destined for stardom. He began fighting as an underground bare-knuckle boxer which appeared in online fight videos on SublimeDirectory and YouTube.

Slice’s on-tape, street-fight loss against Sean Gannon, a former Boston police officer who also trains in MMA, thrust Slice into the spotlight. Slice made his MMA debut against former WBO Heavyweight champion and Olympic gold-medalist boxer Ray Mercer at Cage Fury Fighting Championships 5, in Atlantic City in 2007. Slice will now be part of the tenth installment of The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights. The season will debut on Spike TV on September 16, 2009, following UFC Fight Night 19.

Julie Powell

In 2002, Julie Powell started a blog, chronicling her attempt to cook all the recipes in Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking without ever having so much as cooked an egg before (or so she claims). The blog was so successful that she got a book deal with Little, Brown and Company and wrote Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen (later re-titled Julie and Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously).

Powell’s success story doesn’t end there. The new film Julie & Julia contrasts the life of Chef Julia Child to that of Julie Powell and her goal of cooking Child’s 524 recipes. The movie stars Meryl Streep as Child and Academy Award nominee Amy Adams as Powell. Powell’s next novel Cleaving: a Story of Marriage, Meat, and Obsession is expected to hit bookstores next December.

Jon Lajoie

Talk about a fast-rise to success, Montreal-born Jon Lajoie hadn’t ever done any stand-up and yet his YouTube musical comedy videos garnered millions of views almost instantly. Parodying everyday situations, no subject has been too taboo for Lajoie- as is apparent in songs like Show Me Your Genitals, High as F*!@ or Pedophile Beards. He released his debut album this year, titled You Want Some of This? In 2008, Lajoie performed at Montreal’s Just for Laughs Festival. He has also landed a role in a new series called League- a show about guys, marriage and fantasy football, which will debut in early 2010 on the FX network. Lajoie is currently writing a musical feature and preparing a second album.

Bo Burnham

At 18-years-old, Bo Burnham has become a world wide Internet sensation, and now has a four album deal with Comedy Central Records. He began his “pubescent musical comedy” career in 2006, posting two of his songs on YouTube. The results were unexceptional at first however, after they got copied to Break.com, they became an overnight success. Burnham’s first full album, Bo Burnham, was released by Comedy Central Records on March 10, 2009. He has also received media coverage in magazines like Teen Vogue. (Surely an honor he could have only dreamed of.)

Tay Zonday’s Chocolate Rain

Click here to view the embedded video.

Zonday attracted major media attention with his unusually deep voice, distinctive mannerisms and infamous subtitle which became a repeated meme on 4chan “I move away from the mic to breathe in”. He went on to land live performance gigs on Jimmy Kimmel Live, as well as on BBC Radio 1’s Chris Moyles Show. Dr Pepper then paid him to create a new video for Chocolate Rain named Cherry Chocolate Rain.

Obama Girl

Click here to view the embedded video.

I Got a Crush… on Obama was posted on YouTube by Barely Political in June 2007- became a viral video and made Obama Girl (Amber Lee Ettinger) an instant Internet celebrity. The video was featured on Maxim.com. and made headlines in the news. Obama Girl also landed guest appearances and interviews on Saturday Night Live, The O’Reilly Factor and Geraldo At Large as well as being featured on ABC’s show ‘icaught’. She was also named ‘Babe of the Month’ by Playboy.

Chris Crocker

Click here to view the embedded video.

Possibly one of the most disturbing videos on YouTube, Chris Crocker’s emotional plea to “Leave Britney Alone!” ignited a media frenzy, landing him interviews on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, The Today Show, Maury, The Howard Stern Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live and Ryan Seacrest’s KIIS-FM morning show. The video also helped set off a new music career for Crocker. His single Mind in the Gutter was released last year, and received a lot of radio play. In March 2009, Crocker leaked an unreleased song entitled Fell for the Enemy. He is currently working on a new single.

But despite doubt and scepticism, the Internet has changed the world as we know it; the way we communicate, find and share information, do business and proven- it is very much here to stay. From being a network of networks to becoming a medium; an information superhighway without geographic frontiers, the Internet has made distances shorter and the world much smaller.

McLuhan’s “Global Village” Becomes Reality

Referred to as the “Oracle of the Electronic Age” in the early 1960’s, Marshall McLuhan predicted that humankind would one day be connected through “electronic interdependence”. Shifting from individualism to a collective identity, what McLuhan coined the “Global Village” couldn’t be more accurate today, thanks to the World Wide Web.

Though McLuhan was far ahead of his time, it would take decades before his theories came close to fathomable. In a Newsweek article published in 1995: The Internet? Bah! Hype alert: Why cyberspace isn’t, and will never be, nirvana, Clifford Stroll argues that “the Internet has become a wasteland of unfiltered data”, “without any pretense of completeness”, “lacking editors, reviewers or critics”. Bold statements that were a little too quick to judge, (meanwhile, his article had at least two typos in it), Stroll’s main concern was that computers would actually work to isolate us from one another, not bring us together.

Companies were also worried about investing time and resources into the Web due to its perceived unreliability. In many respects, their concerns were valid. Had more companies gone to the web, the Internet almost certainly wouldn’t have been able to handle the influx of new users.

But the Internet has come along way since then. In December of 1995, a total 16 million people around the world were using the Internet. As of December 2009, that number rose to 1.6 billion.

The Impact of Social Media on Today’s Business

In earlier days, websites functioned as simple on-line brochures for organizations, with very little interaction or real value for customers. But as technology improved, so did websites. Over the years, websites have become more interactive and it’s common to see discussion forums, e-commerce for on-line retailing and a wide range of other features, which ties back to the idea of a Global Village. Social media networking is the name of the game now, with websites having to hook into social media websites and create communities. Though we are beginning to see more and more attempts by both businesses and governments to control the Internet, the trend will most likely lead to increasing transparency if they wish to thrive in our fast-paced Age of Information. “The greatest changes will occur in the arena of trust and human relations.”

Internet Predictions Through Time

Here are just a few videos that offer a glimpse into how the Internet has been perceived over the last 40 years.

Internet predictions in 1969

Shopping online, online banking, webcams, (but perhaps not exchange hosting services)- take a look at how remarkably accurate predictions of the future were in this 1969 video.

Internet 1981 from print to online

Peter Mansbridge on the Growing Phenomenon Called “Internet”

For $200 a year you could be logged on to a computer network called: INTERNET

Interview with an Internet Café owner in 1995

“Ranking up their in popularity with VCR’s, people are now paying their bills, balancing their chequebook, and playing games online with people on the other side of the globe.” Wonder what they would have thought about today’s web based crm software?
